Jeffrey’s Hook Lighthouse, on the Hudson River, is the only remaining lighthouse in Manhattan, New York City.
The cast iron lighthouse was built in 1881 at Sandy Hook, New Jersey. After being in storage at Staten Island, New York, it was reassembled at Jeffrey’s Hook, New York in 1921.
The lighthouse was decommissioned and slated for auction years after the construction of the George Washington Bridge.
The lighthouse’s fate changed due to the popularity of the book The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge” by Hildegarde W. Swift and Lynd Ward.
This story was so compelling that it inspired hundreds of children to write letters that saved the lighthouse.

Amazing story! Children teach us over and over again to step forward to make a difference. Great quote from Jim Kelly, a great NFL player but an even greater person.
